2014 Stein Alfer Hölle 1900

Ulli Stein is famous for uncovering amazing forgotten vineyards, but this is his best score.

There are a mere 3ha of vines planted in 1900 or earlier in the entire Mosel.

Since the 2011 vintage, Ulli Stein has produced an Alfer Hölle from some of them and it’s one of our favorite Rieslings. He produces 400-500 liters per vintage.

Alfer Hölle 1900 is Stein’s magnum opus. Its raciness and delicacy are combined with a serious mineral concentration. There’s length with a driving sea salt and slate-y core that dazzles. It’s just beautiful in its subtlety and understatement while leaving an unforgettable imprint.

Stein is not one for half-measures. He farms some of the steepest sites and oldest vines in the Mosel. From these extreme sites, he produces gorgeously soulful and delicate wines with slate screaming out of the glass.

If there is an advocate - an ambassador - of the forgotten sites of the Mosel it has to be the singular Ulli Stein. We have not personally met another winemaker in the Mosel with his knowledge, passion, boundless energy and devotion to the region's forgotten vineyards. The Alfer Hölle 1900 is a monument to his efforts.
