Volnay Distance Runner
2008 Angerville 1er Cru Champans
Lowest Price in the Nation

Our love of Angerville and of the 08 vintage is no secret.

Today, we take both and add very sharp pricing.

At the beginning of the summer I scored a really well priced parcel of Angerville. There was some '07 Frémiets that was gone in no time; also, some '07 Champans that we offered on July 3rd that sold out within hours despite the holiday weekend.

I've been sitting on this one for a while now. The truth is that this is a hard wine to part with. It feels like when it sells out, it will usher in the end of an era. 2008 is a Burgundy vintage that we've loved from day one for its mineral purity and its classical style.

As time has gone by, two things have happened: our affection for the vintage has deepened considerably and the value that 2008 Burgundy represents has come into focus. Champans from 2009-2011 is in the $95-$150 range.

Angerville is, along with LaFarge, one of the top two producers in Volnay, and one of my personal favorites in all of Burgundy. Among Angerville's incredibly strong line-up, I have a particular soft spot for Champans. It's a rich and powerful expression of Volnay. Above all, Champans is a distance runner - bottles from the 60s are still gorgeously fresh and mind-blowingly good.

Volnay is known for producing wines of a suavely textured, silken elegance. Champans takes this and kicks the complexity up more than a few notches, delivering a deep iron minerality and incredible length. For all its power, Champans always remains beautifully detailed and finessed.

One of the things that we've always loved about the 2008 vintage is how clearly each individual site is rendered. In '08, Champans' signature boldly announces itself with pitch-perfect clarity. As Stephen Tanzer writes, the best of the vintage "are sharply delineated, classic Burgundies with the complex fruit, mineral, floral and soil perfume and the inner-palate energy that other pinot-producing regions can only dream about."

This is one of those offers we'll look back on in a few years with nostalgia: Those were the days when great wines could be had for so little. Luckily, we're still in those days now.

As we mentioned at the start, we have sent out several offers for Angerville in the past few months, and they've all sold out quickly. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try our best.
