Volnay Rarity
2005 Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru

Posted by Ian McFadden

Lafarge is one of our favorite producers. Snagging this parcel of 2005 1er Cru is one of my best scores of the year.

Lafarge's wines have delineation, fine-ness, purity and an understated grace that borders on magical.

Lafarge's Volnay 1er Cru is a consistently beautiful wine, but the 2005 really amazes. The 2005 vintage clearly propelled the wine into another realm.

The 2005 Volnay 1er Cru is a wine that I've loved since release and over the years I've grown increasingly fond of it. It's currently just beginning to enter its drinking window and has many years ahead of it. I have little doubt that this will see its 20th birthday in good shape.

The red Burgundies of 2005 are extraordinary. It's a vintage of nearly unheard-of structure and terroir imprint. It's a very special vintage and one that seems destined to be included with the greats of the past fifty years.

Lafarge's wines have an incredible elegance, nuance and serene precision. The 2005 Volnay 1er Cru struts a stony rigor, an energy and a gripping, earthy complexity. For all of its intensity, there's an understatement and beautiful lift.

I'm going to wrap this up. These will disappear. There's really nothing like 2005, and Lafarge makes some of the most heartbreaking Burgundies around. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try our best.
