The fact that I can offer d'Angerville's Caillerets, much less a back-vintage, is a serious coup.
The supremely elegant Caillerets is the Grand Cru that Volnay never had. With all the force and strength of Clos des Ducs, it still manages the length and balance of Champans. This wine hits a point of absolute equilibrium: feminine but strict; soft-spoken and still quietly, rigorously intense.
Of the four top sites in Volnay - along with Clos des Ducs, Taillepieds, and Clos des Chênes - Caillerets is by far the hardest to get a hold of.
This tiny plot, a mere .65ha, offers up a wine that is taut, profound, with a signature minerality reminiscent of wet, crushed up stones. If Caillerets can be a tad shy in its youth, with time it reveals a heartbreaking elegance and crazy precision. Caillerets is a wine with incredible aging potential.
D'Angerville's 2006s continue to get more and more impressive as they evolve. Because the vintage immediately followed the epic 2005 vintage, many have slept on the 2006s. The vintage is just now beginning to reveal its beautiful, terroir-driven glory.
