Wasenhaus:
Redefining Germany - Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc

Posted by Joe Salamone

There was promise... then there was Wasenhaus.

The new vintage of Wasenhaus has arrived. Many of you know how this goes. To you we say: Place your orders quickly!

If Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) has a long history in Germany, it was only in the late 1990s and early 2000s that these wines really began to get serious. First with "pioneers" like Huber, Keller, and Fürst. Then Henrik Möbitz and Enderle & Moll elevated the game even further, showing that Germany could shape Spätburgunder of profound soil-transparency.

These estates showed the path forward.

Then the tiny estate of Wasenhaus released its 2016 vintage, and everything changed. German Spätburgunder, German Chardonnay, and Weissburgunder had arrived.

From the first vintage, the magic of Wasenhaus was the simplicity: The wines show a startling level of clarity, finesse, balance, and energy.

Burgundy is the obvious reference point; Christoph Wolber and Alex Götze of Wasenhaus both worked in Burgundy for many years at places like Comte Armand, Leflaive, de Montille, Pierre Morey, Domaine de la Vougeraie, and more.

Yet the opposite point is also true and certainly more interesting: They also taste like something different from Burgundy. This quality is very apparent, yet nearly impossible to describe. This is the magic of Wasenhaus.

The 2024 collection has arrived, and today we offer the standard-bearers: a Pinot Noir, a Chardonnay, and a Pinot Blanc (Weissburgunder). The 2024 vintage presents thrilling wines that are ethereal, soil-driven, and linear. They are light but deep.

If the Spätburgunder is their calling card, we cannot recommend the whites enough. The Weissburgunder is chiseled, chalky, and floral - it speaks of a common ancestor in Chablis. The Chardonnay has quickly become one of Germany's most formidable.

Each of these three wines benefits from some time open, or some years in the cellar - perhaps the whites especially, which have incredible tension.

Before closing, I'll just repeat that it's wise to get your orders in early.
