What was true the first time we ever wrote about this wine over a decade ago is even more true today:
This is one of the single greatest deals in Pinot Noir.
Put this wine head-to-head with Pinots from Burgundy, or any other place, and it becomes obvious that the "Liaison" is one of the greatest Pinot Noir values in the world.
Today, with fall decidedly upon us and the cold evenings turning one's thoughts to richer, braised foods, it is an irresistible deal at $32.95 a bottle in three-packs.Â
The 2020 “Liaison” is about as luxurious as Enderle & Moll gets, though the wine retains its signature clarity and buoyancy. Compared with the more structural 2019, the 2020 is more textural and suave, presenting a layered pallet of fresh and perfumed red fruit and a simply staggering soil transparency.
The “Liaison” is so named because it’s sourced from old vines on both limestone and sandstone; in fact, the team here is farming some of the oldest Pinot Noir vines in the region. The Pinots are pressed with a basket press and the elévage is carried out in Dujac barrels sourced directly from the domaine. The wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Enderle & Moll's "Liaison" is nothing less than a canonical bottle of German Pinot Noir, a wine that seems to have introduced the idea of a more delicate elevage, a more delicate touch to many more heavy-handed German Pinot Noirs. It has influenced an entire generation of young growers, yet the "Liaison" especially retains its modest and wildly fair pricing.
