There is a strong case to be made that the Nahe reigned supreme in 2022.
These are wines with some of the structure of 2021 yet with an uncanny lightness and elegance.
Some vintages get put on podiums and other vintages get overlooked. It would be a mistake to sleep on Emrich-Schönleber's GG. They reveal a more complicated truth. There are producers that absolutely shined in 2022.
Today we present an example with a pair of wines that perhaps represent a pinnacle of the 2022 vintage: Emrich-Schönleber's 2022 Grand Cru dry wines - the Halenberg and Frühlingsplätzchen, at the lowest prices in the nation.
While it was dry in the Nahe in 2022, the water stress was not as bad as it was in other places. The concentrations here can be intense, and the acidities rigorous.
If lightness is the defining quality, the essential joy of the top wines of 2022, Schönleber has managed to match this lightness to a startling clarity of fruit, and playful acidity. The top Schönleber wines are laser beams of minerals, flowers, and stone fruits; more than one taster has noted that this upper part of the Nahe shapes wines that resemble the rapier-like Rieslings of the Saar.
The Halenberg is the monument; deeper and structured. The Frühlingsplätzchen is more linear, perfumed, and mineral in youth. Both are profound in 2022.
There is perhaps no other German wine estate with a track record of such ruthlessly mineral, profoundly rigorous dry Rieslings. If you are lucky enough to have any Schönleber GGs from 2004 onward, you know the exquisite fine-ness these wines evolve into.
While the 2022 Schönleber's GGs are open and expressive now, they are structured and dense enough to age for a decade or more effortlessly. We're excited to offer this sharply priced parcel. Don't miss these.
