The 2020 northern Rhônes were some of the most impressive wines that I tasted this year.
For my wine of the year, I choose a 2020 from one of the long-standing benchmarks of the northern Rhône.
There are only a few wines in the northern Rhône that reach similar heights as Jamet's Côte-Rôtie. In 2020, they crafted an absolutely stunning version of his Côte-Rôtie. It was very easy to single it out as my wine of the year.
What was much harder was finding enough of the wine at sharp pricing. I'm happy to offer the 2020 Jamet Côte-Rôtie as my Wine of the Year at $184.95 per bottle and $178.95 in 3-packs.
Jamet hits a level of gracefulness and agility that is reminiscent of Burgundy. This is Côte-Rôtie in its full glory, flaunting a poised and detailed expression of minerals, herbs, spice, savory elements, and florality. The aromatics simply soar.
What makes Jamet's 2020 so exciting is how it combines a rich, layered power with great purity and detail. It's a finely calibrated powerhouse that is jam-packed with complexity and somehow incredibly harmonious. Above all else, there's a real sense that the underlying architecture of the wine will allow it to age beautifully.
The 2020 is simply a monument to one of the legends of the northern Rhône. Having witnessed how profoundly Jamet evolves in the cellar, I couldn't resist making it my wine of the year. I have no doubt that this will go down as one of the greats of the past decade.
