Wine of the Year #1: Joe's Pick
2021 Schäfer-Fröhlich Felseneck Grosses Gewächs

Posted by Joe Salamone

Schäfer-Fröhlich produces some of the greatest expressions of Riesling.

It's already clear that the 2021s will go down as one of the greatest collections of this elite estate.

Across the ranges, Schäfer-Fröhlich's 2021 shows a dumbfounding amount of purity and cut.

As is usually the case, Schäfer-Fröhlich's 2021 Felseneck Grosses Gewächs represents the absolute pinnacle of the range. It comes dangerously close to falling into the "this is as good as dry Riesling gets" category. The 2021 is simply brilliant.

Making the Felseneck GG my wine of the year was a very easy decision. Finding the wine in enough quantity was difficult and I should warn you that this is a modest parcel. I should also mention that I'm happy to offer the wine at the lowest price in the nation by a healthy margin.

Felseneck is Schäfer-Fröhlich's top wine. It combines all of the best attributes of Tim's other sites into something truly stunning. It consolidates all the minerality, texture, and finesse of the other GGs into one stunning whole.

Before Tim Fröhlich put the steep blue slate Felseneck vineyard on the map, it was totally off the radar. Today, some of Germany's best dry Rieslings originate from the site and under Tim Fröhlich's watchful eye.

While a lot of attention has gone to Mosel Kabinetts in 2021, the top dry wines from Nahe and Rheinhessen are among the most thrilling wines of the last decade.

The 2021 Felseneck boasts a showstopping intensity and verve. I really love the pristine mineral expression married to such a degree of impact and concentration. In a glowing review, The Wine Advocate's Stephan Reinhardt calls it "a pure, crystalline, sharp and dense laser sword of a dry Riesling." That serves as a perfect summary of the wine.

I'm very happy to make the 2021 Felseneck Grosses Gewächs my wine of the year. We've been big fans of Tim Fröhlich's wines for over fifteen years. It's great to witness such a stunning success from one of Germany's best.

Title

Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate: "The 2021 Felseneck GG is a wild expression of crushed flint and slate stones, herbs, green leaves, chamomile and lime zests along with iodine notes of lemon juice. Full-bodied but rich and very elegant on the palate, this is a pure, crystalline, sharp and dense laser sword of a dry Riesling that many might call too ascetic for now, but the richness, intensity, concentration and balance are just perfect to guarantee long bottle aging. The tannins are fine and intermingled with salts and extract, power and richness and the character of crushed stones. Very long, intense, concentrated and rich, this is a legend in the making."
