Wine of the Year: Bobby's Pick
2010 Roulot Meursault 1er Cru
The Inaugural Vintage of Another Roulot Gem
Jean-Marc is a modern master who utilizes the medium of Chardonnay as his canvas. His Meursaults are hunted down across the globe.
Today, we have access to what will undoubtedly become next year's new "it" wine.
Jean-Marc Roulot |
Like so many collectors, sommeliers and wine aficionados, I have long been absolutely obsessed with the wines of Domaine Roulot. The scarcity is what turns this passion into pain.
The disconnect between supply and demand is just flat out brutal. Industry allocations are doled out in 3 or 6 bottle quantities, even to top wine merchants and 4-star restaurants.
After tasting this 2010 Roulot Meursault 1er Cru, I was rendered speechless. When I was able to lock up a suitable quantity to spread around to our vast readership, it was a no-brainer to make this my wine of the year.
When I tasted chez Roulot this year, the range was amazing, but I had my eye on this wine for personal reasons. I have no doubt that it will a legendary vintage for the domaine. They are the best young wines from bottom to top that I've ever tasted there.
Jean-Marc keeps going from strength to strength. I do believe he is in a personal golden era of winemaking. Stylistically, the 2010 vintage makes this a perfect scenario.
The origin: Though it's not designated on the label, this 1er Cru comes from the single vineyard Clos des Bouchères. It is my understanding that it will be labeled Clos des Bouchères going forward.
If you're able to find them, Roulot's 1er Crus usually clock-in somewhere around $250 plus and I'm confident that this soon will hit the price points of Perrières, Charmes and Poruzots. He owns no Grand Crus, so this is top of the food chain stuff.
It's best to jump on this now before word gets out, prices climb, and availability inevitably gets ugly.
The 1er Cru Bouchères is bordered by the 1er Crus Les Poruzots and Les Gouttes d'Or. It produces lavish, textured, suave wines. Naturally, Roulot takes the richness of the site and allows a mineral rigor that's flat out stunning.
The 2010 1er Cru displays a beautiful raw power married to tension-filled minerality. Overall, it struts a rich depth of complexity with finely etched contours. The shivering transparency of the 2010 vintage endows the wine with a sense of clarity and energy that's utterly sensational.
This is an unprecedented opportunity to experience one of the world's great winemakers at work. For now, this bottle is cruising under-the-radar. I strongly doubt that I'll ever be able to do a Roulot offer of this magnitude ever again.
It's best to take advantage of this while you can.
