"Wonderful Classiness"
2004 Costanti Brunello di Montalcino Riserva
Every time we offer Costanti, the response is huge. The reason is simple: they are some of the greatest traditional Brunellos.
I've been a huge fan of Costanti for some time. However, my enthusiasm for the estate was cemented last year when I drank an absolutely gorgeous 1990. Costanti makes real deal Brunellos. They need time, but when they hit their stride, beautiful things happen.
The style of Costanti hits everything that I'm after in Brunello. Within a muscular framework, there's always a beautiful gracefulness, an intricate complexity and incredible range of aromatics.
Along with 2006 and 2010, 2004 forms a triumvirate of top Brunello vintages. Stylistically, the 2004 falls in the middle of the other two vintages, boasting 2006's power along with 2010s freshness.
Costanti's 2004 Riserva is a killer example of the best that the vintage has to offer. It has an incredibly bright complexity with floral notes along with spice and incense. The length, balance and quiet elegance really impresses. When Antonio Galloni mentions the wine's "wonderful classiness" and how the "long, harmonious finish rounds out this beautifully balanced 2004 Riserva from Costanti," he captures the wine really well.
This is a one of the best deals in Italian wine that I've come across this year. When you factor in the strength of the vintage and Costanti's track record for producing long-aging, classic Brunellos, this is a don't miss.
