Weingut Willi Schaefer wines never disappoint which is one of the many reasons they're so universally loved.
This small, 4.7 HA estate farms some of the Middle Mosel's top vineyards: Graacher Himmelreich, Graacher Domprobst, and Wehlener Sonnenuhr. The Domprobst vineyard is an enclave of the Himmelreich vineyard whose name is rooted in history: the Trier Cathedral Provost was due one-third of the tithes of wine from Graach.
The Schaefers turn out some of the most magical wines of the middle Mosel. While they are delicious and irresistible in their youth, they only gain brilliance in the cellar.
In an interview with the VDP trade organization, Christoph Schaefer describes the wine style he strives for:
“The DOMPROBST is rather spicy and wild and the HIMMELREICH is more fruity and charming. ... The tremendous minerality gives the wines tension and flatters the fruit sweetness as a counterpoint.”
The Schaefer wines have been among our favorite wines for as long as Crush has been open. Annual production is a tiny 2,900 cases. The makeup of cuvées changes from year to year in response to what nature offers. Not every wine is made every year. We’ve worked diligently to accumulate a sizable collection spanning many vintages with a breadth you will rarely encounter.
