2011 Ledru Cuvée du Goulté

Posted by Joe Salamone

Ledru is a tiny estate that's assumed a huge profile.

I immediately jumped on this parcel when I saw it.

Cuvée du Goulté is Ledru's top wine. As you can imagine, in recent years it's become painfully rare. Landing Goulté in any quantity has become next to impossible.

If you were to go looking for any vintage of Goulté, you'd find 2 listings and a total of 14 bottles in the country.

Simply put, Ledru's Champagnes are so riveting that it's difficult not to become infatuated with them. Marie-Noëlle Ledru makes some of the most heartfelt Champagnes around. There's a rigor and purity that amazes.

Ledru's overall style is one of serious structure, elegance, and an unobstructed expression of the vineyard. The wines have a steely, chalky backbone that's thrilling. The Goulté is a dramatic example of this.

Goulté is all Pinot Noir and sourced from her best parcels in Ambonnay, one of Champagne's best Crus. It's also based on the first juice to come out of the press, which is considered to be the finest.

It's a safe bet the 2011 Goulté will be considered one of the top examples of the vintage. There's no point mincing words: 2011 in Champagne is variable. The vintage has the potential to deliver dazzlingly vivid and mineral examples of Pinot Noir. The Goulté falls into this category.

Ledru handles every aspect of production on her own (from the vineyards, to the paperwork, to the cellar where every bottle is hand-disgorged.) In a vintage like 2011, this hands on approach really paid off.
