2016 Dutraive Fleurie & Brouilly VV

Posted by Joe Salamone

Dutraive has been firmly cemented as one of Beaujolais' premier talents.

Without a doubt, they are some of the most fascinating and delicious wines coming out of the region.

Today, we're happy to offer a duo of Dutraive's 2016s, including our first ever offering of his Brouilly VV.

Dutraive is known for producing Fleuries of incredible aromatics and texture, but in 2016 the Brouilly is really stunning. It's a vintage where it very much deserves some of the spotlight.

Many of you have heard about the way hail decimated parts of Beaujolais in 2016, especially areas of Fleurie, Chiroubles and Morgon. (Dutraive's vines in Fleurie were especially hard hit and quantities are very limited this year.) However, when you start talking about Brouilly and Côte-de-Brouilly in 2016, the story is much different.

Producers will tell you that it was a great vintage for both of the southern Crus. The wines are concentrated, fresh and vivid. They're simply gorgeous. Dutraive's 2016 Brouilly is a startling success. It's a wine that we went long on.

One of the fascinating aspects of Dutraive's parcel in Brouilly is that it's on clay and limestone. Chances are that most of the Brouilly's that you've tasted comes from volcanic soils. In any vintage Dutraive's Brouilly possesses a dark mineral streak, warm spices and a concentrated power. The 2016 edition is dazzling. It boasts a lifted vibrancy.

Dutraive's 2016 Fleurie is delicate with a crunchy, stony minerality and nuanced dark fruits that define their Fleuries. This wine delivers an incredible amount of enjoyment. There's a great precision to the minerality and for all of its verve, a nice sneaking depth.

It's always fun to offer Dutraive's wines. There's something so joyful and interesting about the wines. We suggest that you stock up.
