What the Gonon brothers have achieved on the steep granite slopes of Saint-Joseph is amazing.
In Northern Rhône, Saint-Joseph was thought to be a distant fourth behind Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie and Cornas.
Despite this, Gonon's Saint-Joseph has assumed cult status. The price for the wine has soared and buyers haven't been squeamish at all about chasing the wine up the pricing ladder. It's hard to think of a better testimony to the wine's quality.
The 2016 Northern Rhônes have become an obsession of ours.
They're so clear, concentrated and classically proportioned. In terms of recent vintages, the only comparisons that you can draw are 2010 and 2013.Gonon’s signatures are a pure and clear profile with an intricate and detailed presentation of blackberries, olives, violets, spice and forest floor notes wrapped around a smoke-infused minerality. This is authentic Northern Rhône rendered with the utmost care.
The 2016 Saint-Joseph has a startling clarity and serious, finely detailed length. At this young stage, you get a vivid impression of how well composed and deep it is. It's very easy to imagine it aging beautifully.
I strongly encourage you to check out Levi Dalton's I'll Drink To That! interview with Jean Gonon. It offers a direct line into the workings and philosophy of the domaine.
Sadly, the days of an unlimited supply of Gonon are long gone. I seriously doubt that our modest parcel will last the weekend. If you're interested, don't hesitate.
