Morey St. Denis "Les Chaffots", Morey St. Denis 1er Cru VV Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes & Clos de la Roche
We love Lignier's wines for their rugged, soulful honesty.
These are Burgundies of unmediated majesty.
Lignier is one of the most consistent Burgundy producers that we know. Today, we're happy to offer our four favorite Lignier wines from the 2018 vintage at very sharp pricing.
Lignier's 2018s are powerhouse saturated with minerality and possessing a beautiful verve. Below you'll find descriptions of the wines.
The Chaffots 1er Cru sits above Clos de la Roche and Clos St. Denis. It's a very rocky site. Lignier's makes clear this is an extreme site- boasting intense concentration with driving acidity, jagged tannins and a dark stony minerality. Age brings an incredible amount of depth and mystery to the wine.
The Morey 1er Cru VV is one of Lignier's cult bottlings. It's sourced from old vines that sit beneath the Clos de la Roche Grand Cru in the 1er Crus Les Faconnieres and Les Chenevery. Lignier's long-time importer, Neal Rosenthal, writes the Morey 1er Cru VV: "possesses that ineffable Grand Cru stature."
The Gevrey 1er Cru Combottes is surrounded by Grand Crus (Latricieres-Chambertin, Charmes Chambertin, and Clos de la Roche). Lignier has a tiny old-vine holding here. It's intense with earth, mineral, and finely interwoven Gevrey fruit. There's some of the delicacy of Morey with some of the muscle of Gevrey - it's a really impressive combination.
Lignier's Clos de la Roche is often mentioned in the same breath as the appellation's other benchmarks - Ponsot, Dujac, and Leroy. Clos de la Roche sits on a rock-hard layer of limestone with a thin layer of topsoil. Lignier's parcels are in two different climats, Monts Luisants and Les Fremieres. The vines are 50-60 years old.
There are few producers that I have a soft spot for like Liginer. The style has remained steadfast over decades, and the results are truly impressive.I'm happy to be able to offer these wines.
