"A jewel of a wine" Revisited - 2012 Pierre Peters l'Esprit

Posted by Ian McFadden

When I had a second opportunity to buy Pierre Peters' 2012 l'Esprit, I didn't hesitate.

Pierre Peters has a fairly large and strong lineup, but recently l'Esprit has emerged as one of our favorites.

The bottling wonderfully captures Rodolphe Peters' unparalleled ability to produce Champagnes of refinement and mineral-inflected elegance.

L’Esprit is only made in top vintages, and it's sourced from four single vineyards in the Grand Crus of Le Mesnil, Avize, Cramant and Oger. In any given vintage the blend is at least 40% Le Mesnil, which accounts for the wine’s racy finesse and finely detailed minerality.

Often, Peters' Champagnes demand time in the cellar to show their full glory. Thankfully, the 2012 l'Esprit isn't shy about revealing what makes Pierre Peters so riveting. It possesses a glorious textural minerality.

Every time that I have drunk 2012 l'Esprit its purity and brilliance stand out. It is a thrilling example from one of the masters of the Chardonnay grape.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media: "The 2012 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs L’Esprit is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. Creamy, ample and expressive on the palate, the 2012 possesses notable breath and immediacy. Hazelnut, dried fruit, spice and toasty notes add to the wine’s considerable appeal. The Esprit is a terrific example of the vintage. Dosage is 4 grams per liter."
