For the past handful of vintages, we've watched the quality at Gouges soar.
It's very clear that the 2017 vintage represents Gouges at the top of their game.
Nuits is particularly strong in 2017, and Gouges' Vaucrains dramatizes just how well this village performed. It not only has the purity and minerality of the vintage, but it also boasts a formidable structure that lets you know that it will be around for the long-haul.
Vaucrains is undisputedly one of Nuits St. Georges' greatest sites. In Gouges' hands, amazing things happen to this mineral and sauvage site. There are seemingly countless examples of Gouges' Vaucrains that have aged brilliantly.
While the 2017 Vaucrains is endowed with the masculine, sauvage character that we’ve come to expect from Vaucrains, there’s also plenty of lift and liveliness. The palate is wildly textural, with dark fruits and earth-saturated minerality, giving way to an explosive, lengthy finish. Even with all of its sturdiness and density, there’s an undeniable freshness and pristine clarity.
This is simply a dynamite example of the 2017 red Burgundy vintage and a testimony to how exciting the current era at Gouges is. I'm very happy to have another opportunity to offer the 2017 Vaucrains. I expect this to age beautifully.

Burghound: "Slightly riper aromas of plum liqueur, violet, warm earth and plenty of sauvage character lead to intense and notably dense broad-shouldered flavors that display first-rate power on the serious and youthfully austere finish. This is a big wine in the context of what is typical for the 2017 vintage and should age effortlessly."
