Agrapart’s 2013 Vénus is simply spectacular.
For the past few months, we've been beating the drum for Agrapart's 2013s. Vénus may very well represent the pinnacle of their great 2013s.
Today, we’re excited to offer Agrapart’s 2013 Vénus Blanc de Blancs Brut Nature Grand Cru for $194.95 per bottle.
The 2013 Vénus takes the cuvée's elegance and nuance to an unheard-of level. For us, it’s one of the highlights of the vintage.
In Champagne, 2013 is a special vintage. To sum it up in a single word, it's about purity. It was a cooler, slow-maturing year. Many growers didn’t harvest until early October, which used to be the norm in the 80s, but seldom happens today. Peter Liem wrote of the 2013 Champagne vintage, “this is turning out to be one of my favorite vintages of the past twenty years.” We fully agree.
The Côte des Blancs was particularly successful in 2013. The vintage allowed Chardonnay to flaunt its sleek, energetic, and finessed personality in a crystal clear manner.
Agrapart’s cuvee Vénus is made from his best parcel in Avize, a .33 hectare vineyard called La Fosse that was planted in 1959. In 2000, Agrapart began plowing the vineyard by horse in order to reduce soil compaction. The horse, a Boulonnais mare named Venus, also gave her name to the wine.
In any vintage, Vénus is a Champagne of haunting depth and presence. The 2013 has a pristine expression and incredible drive. Peter Liem describes it as "silky in texture yet racy and knife-like in structure," which gives you a good sense of how exhilarating and appealing the 2013 Vénus is.
To put it briefly, 2013 is a great Champagne vintage that produced a magical example of Vénus. Agrapart is one of my favorite producers in all of Champagne, and they really knocked it out of the park with the 2013 Vénus.

Peter Liem, champagneguide.net: "On paper, the 2013 vintage seems like a perfectly complementary one for this cuvée, and the wine certainly lives up to its promise. While it’s vividly intense in its ripeness and depth, this seems to amplify the minerality rather than fruit flavor, feeling like a distillation of savory, briny chalk. It expands on the palate in complex, multi-dimensional fragrance, silky in texture yet racy and knife-like in structure, and the flavors persist on the finish with superb length and detail. This is a stunning champagne, and one of the finest editions of this cuvée that Agrapart has made yet."
