A couple of weeks ago, we offered an extensive listing of our inventory from Gevrey-Chambertin. I pulled these two wines out for their own stand-alone offer.
They deserve their moment in the spotlight.
The reasons are both simple and somewhat complicated in the sort of fascinating way that makes Burgundy so great.
The quick and easy explanation is that these are some of our favorite red Burgundy values.
For me, the more important thing in play is all of the intriguing things that spin out of juxtaposing the two wines. I'm not one for purely intellectual exercises. This is very much about delightful drinking.
With Jouan, you have an older generation making decidedly old fashioned, somewhat wild Gevreys. In Duroché, you see a rising young star making first-rate, rigorous, subtle, and transparent Burgundies.
The sites also show the terroir differences that exist on the level of village Burgundy, Gevrey-Chambertin "Aux Echezeaux" is in the southern section and Gevrey-Chambertin "Champ" is in the northern part of the appellation.
While Gevrey-Chambertin is known for its meatiness and power, Aux Echézeaux is surprisingly elegant. It is located in the southern end of the region, right next to Morey-St.-Denis, and produces wines that are much more silky and delicate. Jouan’s 2017 "Aux Echézeaux" is bright and ethereal. It beautifully shows how texturally and aromatically seductive Gevrey can be.
Duroché’s Champ comes from northern Gevrey, from a site averaging 40-45-year-old vines. Champ's signature is refinement and detailed minerality. The profile is darker and more firmly structured around an earthy mineral core. The 2017 "Champ" is a profoundly exciting bottle. The vintage endowed "Champ" with a remarkable precision and class.
I'm very excited to offer these two wines. They highlight that honest, complex, and terroir specific Burgundy can be within reach.
