2021 Schäfer-Fröhlich Frühlingsplätzchen Grosses Gewächs

Posted by Joe Salamone

We've worked with Schäfer-Fröhlich's wines for seventeen vintages and this is the first time that we've been able to offer their Frühlingsplätzchen.

This is a wine that's very hard to find in quantity. It is also one of the most fascinating wines in Tim Fröhlich's line-up.

The Frühlingsplätzchen vineyard was made famous by the Nahe's other benchmark dry wine producer, Emrich-Schönleber. Its signature is a bright floral profile with a glossy and cut. This red slate site is all about cool toned focus.

As you probably can guess, Tim Fröhlich takes this site's qualities to the extreme. In his hands, Frühlingsplätzchen becomes a sight of laser sharp purity.

In 2021, Schäfer-Fröhlich's entire line-up is brilliant. They are some of the dry wines of the vintage. The collection above all is defined by its clarity and precision. Frühlingsplätzchen really flourished in this vintage. It is ultra-clear layers of citrus, flower, and of course slate. There's an ethereal and soaring mid-palate, and finish of explosive minerality.

The 2021 Frühlingsplätzchen makes clear that this is one of the greatest estates in the world for dry Riesling. For fans of sheer minerality and cut, this should not be missed.

Quantities are very limited. Please give us your ideal order, and we'll do our best.

Stephan Reinhardt, Vinous:

"From shallow red slate and very old vines, the 2021 Frühlingsplätzchen GG offers a bright and radiant bouquet with stony and herbal aromas intertwined with notes of crushed slate and Amalfi lemon zests. Crystalline and pure but also lush on the palate, this is a linear, precise and saline, crunchy and challenging Riesling with an extreme slate stamp, reduced fruit and charm but with the intensity and extract for long development. This firm, almost austere long-distance runner will reward our patience."
