Ancient Madeira:
D'Oliveiras 1850 Verdelho Reserva & 1875 Sercial Reserva

Posted by Ian McFadden

D'Oliveiras has long been a standard-bearer, and they've supplied me with my greatest Madeira experiences.

There is absolutely no doubt that this is the address for superlative old stocks.

Today, I'm happy to offer a duo of wines that reaches back to D'Oliveiras' inception one hundred and seventy years ago, the 1850 Verdelho Reserva and 1875 Sercial Reserva.

These are precious, mindbendingly layered testimonies to one of the world's great wines. They are wines that are so hauntingly complex that you can't ever quite put your finger on the magic unfurling before you.

Verdelho is known to produce richer Madeiras on the drier side. The 1850 is absolutely regal. It's layered with notes of roasted nuts, burnt orange, honeysuckle, spice, and caramel. The wine is dense and oily but has an incredible amount of underlying texture.

The Sercial grape is famed for delivering the driest Madeiras with the highest level of verve. There's a level of breeding that's unbelievable. They are also the most refined. The 1875 takes this to an other-worldly level. It's an incredible wine with a huge complexity of fruit ranging from marmalade to stone fruits, smoke, and tangerine.

These are wines that simply defy words with their sheer profundity. They've become increasingly rare. If you're interested, I strongly encourage you to take advantage of this offer while you can. Supplies are very limited.
