We're constantly on the hunt for sub-$20 Nebbiolo that really delivers.
With very few exceptions, we come up empty handed.
This is without a doubt the best value in Nebbiolo that we've tasted all year. The seven years of age gives the added complexity. The riper 2009 vintage gave the wine added power.
What makes the Cantalupo Agamium stand out is the amount of lift and energy that it delivers. It explodes with notes of earth, game, red fruits and minerals. Antonio Galloni nails it when he highlights the wine's "considerable grace."
Cantalupo is based in Ghemme, an area north of Barolo and Barbaresco. Up in the northern reaches of Piedmont, the grape is able to achieve a haunting delicacy, a lovely nervosity and stony minerality. These are wines that are fascinating to drink, pair with a wide range of foods, and are incredibly gulpable.
For many years, Cantalupo has been the standard-bearer for Ghemme. Their wines from the late seventies are still drinking well today. Cantalupo has long followed traditional methods and while the Agamium is intended to be their young quaffer, there's a depth and honesty to it that's really compelling. We created the special 6-pack pricing, because this is a habit-forming bottle that you'll want plenty of on hand.
We expect this to be here today and gone tomorrow. We took all that we could, but it's doubtful that it will last long. The deal is simply too compelling.
