Drouhin's lineup is dizzying in its breadth. The Bonnes-Mares is one of the greatest, and with a 0.23ha parcel, one of the most elusive.
For me, Drouhin's Bonnes-Mares is one of the great examples of the Grand Cru. In any vintage, it's among my favorite expressions of the site.
Along with Chambertin and Clos de la Roche, Bonnes-Mares is a Grand Cru known for its muscle, tannin, and sheer force. Unsurprisingly, Drouhin brings a relative delicacy to the site and teases out a shocking refinement to Bonnes-Mares. Catching Drouhin's Bonnes-Mares in its prime is a thing of utter beauty.
Bonnes-Mares really needs time to show the complexity and breeding that it has to offer. I'm very happy to have landed a small parcel of back-vintage Drouhin Bonnes-Mares from 1996.
The 1996 vintage turned out red Burgundies with serious structure and formidable acidity. Drouhin turned out a really beautiful lineup in 1996. The collection was very nicely balanced and integrated.
The 1996 Bonnes-Mares highlights Drouhin's success. It's crystal clear with seamless power and resonance, all buoyed by lift and perfume. It shows the unrivaled pedigree and class that Drouhin's Bonnes-Mares delivers.
It's very rare that I'm able to get my hands on Drouhin's Bonnes-Mares in any quantity, and it's unheard of when it comes to back-vintages. I feel lucky to have landed this parcel, but I should warn you that there isn't much to go around.
