Back-Vintage Red Burgundy—Hauntingly Beautiful:
2013 Jouan Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Clos Sorbé

Posted by Ian McFadden

I've been chasing after this wine for the past six months.

I drank two bottles of the wine this past year, and both have been absolutely beautiful with astonishing intricacy and classic Burgundian character.

For red Burgundy, 2013 is a very energetic, soil-inflected, and clear vintage with beautifully classic proportions.

Clos Sorbé is most likely Morey's most heartbreakingly delicate site. It is a devastatingly lacey and mineral expression of red Burgundy.

Jouan's signature is pristine expression, precise finesse, and an ultra-seductive mineral-laden texture. There are few bottles where Jouan's style flourishes as profoundly as it does here.

The 2013 Clos Sorbé is hauntingly brilliant. It has amazing transparency with lifted notes of earth, game, and crushed red berry fruit. There's not much more to say. Both represent just how beautiful, pure, and quietly complicated red Burgundy can be.

It's rare that I get to offer Jouan with age on it. I wish this parcel was bigger, but I'm happy to have some to offer. Get your orders in early.
