Castell'in Villa represents Chianti at its most ageworthy and most finessed.
You can find bottles from the 70s that are stunningly good.
For the past three months, I've become very excited about Castell'in Villa. It's really fun to give a bottle of Castell'in Villa to a seasoned Burgundy collector and watch them come back for a 6-pack.
This is one of the great, traditional and honest examples of Sangiovese. For decades, Castell'in Villa has been a benchmark for the region. Somehow, the wines still seem to cruise under the radar.
Castell'in Villa's style is one of harmony and exacting precision. The wines flaunt a magical combination of verve, transparency and pure power. For me, the total package is amazing.
The 2001 Riserva summarizes their style in a really compelling way. In Tuscany, 2001 is one of the great vintages of the past few decades. It has an incredible drive with deeply etched detail and lift. The wine is tightly coiled, packed with complexity and possesses a vivid, soaring cast of aromatics. It has a captivating agility and finesse.
The 2001 Riserva is just beginning to enter its early drinking window. We expect it age absolutely beautifully. The life of Castell'in Villa in the cellar simply amazes. Antonio Galloni calls Castell'in Villa: "One of the most age worthy wines in Italy." This is especially true in vintages like 2001. Happy to offer.
