Canary Islands Superstar: 2017 Suertes del Marques Trenzado Valle de la Orotava

Posted by Joe Salamone

Suertes del Marques makes some of the most refined wines that we've tasted from the Canary Islands.

The Canary Islands have emerged as one of the most exciting wine regions. There are few places that produce wines as loaded with terroir and character.

Along with Envinate's bottlings, Suertes del Marques is the region's superstar. The wines have a class, clarity and precision that really sets them apart.

Suertes del Marques is known for having a special touch with white wine and the Trenzado is a really compelling example of this.

Trenzado refers to a unique vine training practice of the area - the vines are braided (check out the label to the right). This bottling is a blend of vineyards around Valle de la Orotava that range from 10-150 years old.

Suertes del Marques is situated on the island of Tenerife where the El Teide volcano is a defining presence. The Valle de le Orotava is on the north, northeast side.

The Trenzado boasts a pristine and emphatic mineral thread. It's based on Listan Blanco (aka Palomino in sherry country) along with a small percentage of other native grapes. Listan Blanco has a fascinating ability for transmitting terroir and the wine really exploits this characteristic. There are gorgeously clear layered fruits and a seriously complex mineral core. The amount of detail and class is shocking.

This is easily one of the most exciting wines at this price point that we've tasted this year. You'd be hard pressed to find a wine that's so precise and individual for twice the price.
