We first offered Gérard's Saint-Joseph in 2017. It quickly became one of our most popular offers.
Le Blanchard is one of Saint-Joseph's coolest vineyards. Here, Saint-Joseph possesses an unusual finesse, agility, and perfume—elements that it shares with Cote-Rotie. It all adds up to an exciting and gorgeous example of Syrah.
Xavier Gérard has maintained a low profile, but he's among the most talented winemakers in the northern Rhône.
Gérard was introduced to his importer, none other than Neal Rosenthal, by the great Côte-Rôtie classicist Bernard Levet. Xavier Gérard took over his family's small domaine in earnest in 2012 and, in no time, has turned out incredibly elegant and traditionally made Syrah and Viognier.
The majority of Gérard's holdings are in Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu. His Saint-Joseph comes from Le Blanchard, a vineyard just south of Condrieu. In a good vintage, he makes a mere 2,000 bottles of the Saint-Joseph.
Its cooler location has helped the wine maintain amazing precision and bright, delineated aromatics. In the warm 2022 vintage, the wine has sleek finesse with soaring floral notes, spice, earth, and dark fruits, with nice freshness and energy on the finish. The 2022 showed really well during a recent staff northern Rhône tasting that included Allemand, Gonon, Chave, and Jamet.
Gérard's Saint-Joseph pretty much sells out each time we offer it. The explanation is simple: it's an extremely appealing, honest Northern Rhône Syrah at a fair price. Please give us your ideal order, and we'll try our best.
