The 1er Cru Caillerets is likely the most supremely elegant and mineral wine of Volnay.
In 2017, Caillerets is in full effect. It is an incredibly finessed, radiant, and mineral example of Caillerets.
D'Angerville's Caillerets is Volnay at its most painstakingly precise. It does not lack in intensity or length, but delivers these with a subtlety and a gorgeous slow-to-unfold complexity.
For a good number of Burgundy experts, Caillerets is one of the best sites in Volnay. Many believe that if Volnay were to have Grand Crus, Caillerets would be at the top of the list. D'Angerville is the master of this site.
Sadly, d'Angerville has a mere 0.65ha in Caillerets. D'Angerville's Caillerets is seriously scarce. Every vintage, I buy as much as possible.
D'Angerville's 2017s are absolutely stunning. Few producers captured the vintage as well. We agree with Burghound when he writes: "I was particularly taken with the quality I found here."
The 2017 takes purity to the extreme. It's a study in the site's stony minerality, class and lift. I really love how it blatantly flaunts Cailleret's refinement in such a perfectly calibrated way.
D’Angerville has supplied me with some of my most memorable bottles of old Burgundy. I'm really excited to watch this evolve. Everything points to it becoming an absolutely heartbreaking wine.
