"Don't miss it!" - 2008 Philipponnat Clos des Goisses

Posted by Ian McFadden

Clos des Goisses is an extremely steep and extremely chalky vineyard. Many consider it to be Champagne's greatest site.

It's no surprise that Clos des Goisses 2008 is one of the stars of the stunning vintage.

Along with 2002, 2008 is the best vintage of the decade and is on a similar level as vintages like 96, 88 and 76. Where 2002 is defined by a high level of ripeness and muscle, 2008 is about purity, harmony and an energetic structure. We love the total package.

Clos des Goisses is an unusually warm site. The combination of being a steep and south-facing vineyard helps make Goisses considerably warmer than its neighbors.

As impressive as 2008 generally is, something really special happened with Clos des Goisses in this vintage. 2008's racy finesse combines with the saturating mineral-laden grandeur of Clos des Goisses to create something incredible, even in the context of the vintage.

Clos des Goisses is an absolutely unique experience of straining chalk imbued power and aristocratic breeding. It is easily among the longest lived and most complicated wines in all of Champagne. The 2008 is destined to be a legend.
