Etna As It Should Be
2017 Masseria del Pino Etna Rosso I Nove Fratelli

Posted by Joe Salamone

Masseria del Pino, a tiny estate on Mount Etna’s northern face, seems to belong to another era.

A quiet dirt road weaves through serene, mountainside farmland before arriving at the one-hectare vineyard, planted to 120-year-old pre-phylloxera bush-trained vines.

Mount Etna is a place that we think has incredible potential and yet, this is only the fourth Etna producer that we've offered in fifteen years.

Masseria del Pino turns out Etna Rosso exactly as we like. There's a richness and power for sure, but what makes the wine special is its delicacy and incredible balance. The wine is extremely pure, a clear influence from the volcanic soils

Cesare Fulvio and Federica Turillo purchased the farm in 2005 and revived the property’s ancient palmento (an old, Sicilian cellar), complete with an old press and a lava stone fermentation vessel. Their goal was to make wines that were a true reflection of Mount Etna’s unique terroir. The biodynamically farmed grapes, Nerello Mascalese along with some Nerello Cappuccio, are stomped by foot, open-vat fermented, then aged for a year in large, 500-liter barrels.

This is a wine that we absolutely love. After we tasted it, we tried to buy all that we could and ended up with only a handful of cases. For us, there's nothing like it being produced on Etna.
