Eye-Opening Burgundy - Refinement and Value:
2017 Fornerol Côte de Nuits Rouge

Posted by Ian McFadden

It's rare for Burgundies to nail the combination of deliciousness, rigor, and affordability like Fornerol's Côte de Nuits Villages does.

The wines are simply shocking in this regard. This is one of the more eye-opening and irresistible everyday Burgundies that I've tasted.

I have a soft spot for Côte de Nuits. Mostly due to Bachelet's wines. Didier Fornerol takes Côte de Nuits to a level of refinement and sheer drinkability that I thought was impossible.

The style here is unlike most Burgundies that you'll taste today. They look back to the Burgundies of the old days thriving on grace and lightness.

The 2017 Côte de Nuits Rouge has an incredibly silky texture with spiced dark fruits and earthy minerality. It possesses the outrageous drinkability that's one of Fornerol's hallmarks. However, it's far from a mere quaffer - there's incredible refinement and detail to the wine.

Didier Fornerol was the vineyard manager and cellar master at Domaine de L’Arlot from 1982 until 1998. In 1999, he returned to his family's domaine. Today, he has really fine-tuned the winemaking at the domaine with crucial help from L'Arlot's legendary Jean-Pierre de Smet. Given how much we've loved many of the older L'Arlot, it's no surprise that Fornerol is such an impressive discovery for us.
