This is the sort of wine that we could only find by tasting through a lineup and seeing what jumped out.
On paper, Monastrell (Mouvedre) from Castilla La Mancha in central Spain wouldn't have caught our attention.Â
However, this bottle was one of the stars of a recent tasting of over 25 wines. It was pure, layered, and had a captivating impression of honest drinkability. Above all, at as low as $22.95 per bottle, the value it has to offer is ridiculous.Â
Castilla La Mancha is known for volume production, but it is also home to old vines, interesting soils, and a profoundly long history of winemaking.Â
Llámalo X's JosĂ© JoaquĂn Ballesteros is interested in exploring obscure varietals, organic viticulture, exploiting old vines, and traditional winemaking. The results are uttlerly fascinating.Â
This Monastrell comes from 75-year-old vines in sandy loam. It combines levity with dark fruits that are complicated by notes of herbs and pulverized rock. The wine gives the impression of being powerful and intense while remaining playful and light on its feet. The total package is a wine that hits the rare combination of being fun and offering plenty to think about.Â
The Castilla La Mancha region has a long history of producing amphoras (locally called tinajas). Many of the top producers using amphora sing the praises of the area's barrels. Llamalo X's Monastell ages in tinajas for three months before being transferred to used barrels for additional aging.Â
I'll wrap this up. We're offering special 6-pack pricing because this wine is worth having around in quantity. It's crowd pleasing and drinks well above its price point.Â
