Without a doubt, this is the best value in summer refreshment that we've stumbled upon in many years.
When it comes to the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Karthäuserhof has long been one of the absolute masters of dry Riesling. Their Auslese Trocken "S" is legendary. Even their basic Ruwer Trocken has an extraordinary track record for aging. We've had impressive bottles with ten years of age.
This is part of a very, very-well priced parcel that we were lucky enough to find. In June, we offered Karthauserhof's 2014 Kabinett and Spätlese. We're happy to turn to the dry side of the range today. In terms of value, this parcel is easily one of the deals of the year.
Up in the foresty, dew-covered Ruwer Valley, Karthäuserhof has been producing some of the most glowing, delicate, and mineral-drenched Rieslings since 1335. The Ruwer is essentially defined by two great monopoles: Von Schubert's Abts/Bruder/Herrenberg trio and Karthäuserhof's eponymous Karthäuserhofberg.
Karthäuserhof always possesses an airy and buoyant citrus signature with herbs, flowers and forest-floor. Regardless of the vintage, the wines are subtle and have an enchanting combination of minerality and acidity that's gorgeous. Their harmony and formidable acidity help to explain why Karthäuserhof has such an impressive track record for aging.
Karthäuserhof's 2013 flaunts the rainwater minerality and acid cut of their style. The 2014s are vivid, incredibly expressive of floral notes and herb-tinged yellow fruits. Both wines offer a beautiful, fine thread of acidity and incredible poise, making them perfect for the warm months.
Simply put, this a wine you’ll want to have in quantity throughout the summer and beyond. Whether you're grilling outside or just enjoying the sunshine, few wines simultaneously offer as much value and sheer enjoyment. We strongly recommend stocking up.
