Greatness In Clear Focus - Magnum Edition
2017 Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge Magnums

I love Clos des Mouches Rouges in vintages like 2017.

For me, it's vintages like this where the greatness of Clos des Mouches is laid bare. 2017 offers a nearly perfect snapshot of the wine's long-aging and multifaceted personality. It's exactly the sort of vintage that you'll want magnums.

I've put a lot of effort into securing magnums, which I'm happy to offer today for $229.95.

This prime mid-slope vineyard was one of the first purchases of Maurice Drouhin when he essentially established domaine bottlings in the 1920s.

Drouhin's Clos des Mouches quickly became an expectation-defying wine beloved by Burgundy insiders. On paper, it's a Beaune 1er Cru and nothing to get excited about. In actuality, Clos des Mouches boasts a complexity and longevity that rivals Grand Crus.

Simply put: Clos des Mouches is a very special site. If Beaune is known for being somewhat sturdy and rustic, Clos des Mouches is something of an anomaly; the wine is strikingly elegant, suave and silky in texture. Drouhin's Clos des Mouches is a wine that nearly always has some space in those glossy cellars filled with Grand Cru Burgundy and First Growth Bordeaux.

The 2017 very nicely consolidates what makes Clos des Mouches such a fascinating and compelling outlier. It possesses a radiant, silky fineness and the rigorous structure that has made it a secret among serious Burgundy fanatics for years.

Clos des Mouches Rouge has a reputation for making serious old bones - Burghound has notes from a recent tasting of a great 1964. The 2017 is a stunning example of the wine's composure, limestone-driven structure, and sheer seductiveness. In the magnum format, it will be majestic with age.

Burghound "A discreet application of wood sets off the ripe and very fresh aromas of plum, various red berries and a pretty floral element. The opulent and highly seductive medium weight flavors are shaped by firm but not rigid tannins on the balanced finish. This should age gracefully and yet be approachable after only 5ish years."
