Grower Champagne Essential
Robert Moncuit Réserve Perpétuelle Blanc de Blancs

Posted by Ian McFadden

The champagnes of Robert Moncuit have become our go-tos.

Out of the entire line-up, the Réserve Perpétuelle is the bottle that we reach for most often. The combination of depth, complexity, and value is unbeatable.

The Réserve Perpétuelle is a fascinating expression of Mesnil, one of Champagne's greatest villages. Mesnil is holy ground for chardonnay. Its chalky soils create an expression of the varietal that’s amazingly precise and full of energy. Mesnil supplies some of our most beloved expressions of chardonnay and champagne.

While Mesnil can lean towards the severe with its mineral cut, the wonderful thing about Moncuit is how it presents Mesnil’s striking chalky elegance with plenty of charm. The wine is supremely pleasurable – with structure and integrity, yes, but all in the service of enjoyable drinking.

The Réserve Perpétuelle employs a range of reserve wines ranging from 2006-2012 and utilizes a very small dosage, just two grams per liter, highlighting the terroir’s chalky signature. Under layers of complexity, it boasts a radiant core. There's incredible umami accented nuance with refinement and mineral-inflected elegance.

When everything is considered, this is one of our top champagne picks for the holiday season. Seldom do price, accessibility, and seriousness intersect in such a profound way. I'm very happy to offer this stunning champagne from Robert Moncuit.
