"Dense, powerful and explosive, the 2009 hits all the right notes." -Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
Le Mesnil is holy ground for Chardonnay, and Chétillons is one of the choicest parcels in all of Mesnil.
This has made Chetillons one of the cult bottlings of Champagne. With perhaps the exception of Jacques Selosse, Pierre Peters is the Champagne that industry people talk about the most and in the most reverential terms. Chetillons plays an outsized role in Peters' status.
Peters' Chetillons is one of our favorite 2009 Champagnes. Mesnil is famous for its high tension acidity and piercing minerality. The warmer 2009 vintage added a dimension of power and richness without sacrificing the definition that makes Chetillons so riveting.
Chetillons is a renowned, very chalky vineyard. Peters' oldest vines in the site are nearly 70 years old and the youngest are 35 years. The old vines endow it with serious concentration. Generally speaking, what makes Chetillons so stunning is how it takes Mesnil's chalky steeliness and energy and adds a layer of ripe citrus and more palate presence.
The 2009 brings a fascinating silky, richness of complexity while remaining light on its feet and maintaining Chetillon's famous elegance. It leaves the impression that the vintage accentuated elements of complexity not obvious in other vintages - things like mushrooms, subtle honey notes and almonds. It does so with remarkable purity.
Simply put: This is some of the most beautiful Chardonnay in the world. Only 7,000 bottles were produced, so there's little to go around. Still, I wouldn't be surprised if we had to allocate at the end of the day.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media: "The flagship 2009 Brut Les Chétillons looks like it will reward readers with a long and broad drinking window of pure pleasure. The warmth of the vintage has given the 2009 Chétillons a bit more mid-palate richness and sweetness than is typical, yet there is plenty of Mesnil drive and precision in the glass. Dense, powerful and explosive, the 2009 hits all the right notes. Best of all, it won't need years in bottle to come together."
