If you’re after red Burgundies with stony cores, finesse, and just the right amount of wildness, then this is an essential address to know.
Simon Bize makes red Burgundy exactly as we like it.
They are not blockbusters; they do not rely on power. Instead, the wines are mineral and honest, possessing a luscious rusticity and quiet finesse.
These are some of the most authentic, thoughtful, and too often overlooked wines we know. Bize’s wines are such soulful and long aging expressions of Burgundy that they are “must-buys.”
The village of Savigny-les-Beaune is remarkable for its large number of 1er Crus - 22 in total. Along with Les Vergelesses and La Dominode, Les Fournaux and Aux Guettes are two of our favorites. If Les Vergelesses is structured and refined, Les Fournaux and Guettes are more muscular and enveloping. Both Fournaux and Guettes have plenty of punch and have a nice combination of richness and finesse.
Bize's 2017 collection is incredibly strong. I really wanted to offer these three wines together so you can see just how sensitive the winemaking is. They are beautifully composed and possess a dazzling clarity.
It really feels like Chisa Bize is at the height of her powers. Each vintage seems to go from strength to strength. These 2017s are not to be missed. I strongly encourage you to take advantage of the special 3-pack pricing.

Burghound: "This is the first wine to display much reduction and it's enough to suppress the underlying fruit at present. There is more size, weight and richness if less minerality to the muscular medium-bodied flavors that terminate in a rustic, serious and sneaky long finish. Patience definitely advised."
2017 1er Cru Aux Guettes
Special Bottle Price: $94.95
Burghound: "Layered aromas consist primarily of forest floor, dark cherry and a whisper of violet. The more serious, mineral-suffused and concentrated flavors deliver solid persistence and complexity on mildly austere finale. While this should drink well after 4 to 5 years, it should also reward a decade of cellaring."
2017 1er Cru Aux Vergelesses
Special Bottle Price: $94.95
Neal Martin, Vinous Media: "The 2017 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Vergelesses 1er Cru was somewhat muted on the nose compared to other Premier Crus from Bize. It didn’t want to come out and play on the day of my visit! The palate is medium-bodied and demonstrates good intensity, perhaps the most structure and grip of the range, and lovely raspberry and light spicy notes toward the finish. Give this three or four years to allow the aromatics to open."
