Hitting The Bullseye, Part II:
2017 Simon Bize Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Marconnets

Posted by Ian McFadden

Last week, we offered Bize's 2017 Savigny 1er Cru Aux Vergelesses.

Today, I'm happy to offer the 2017 Savigny 1er Cru Les Marconnets.

As we said last week, Bize's 2017s offer a perfect summary of what makes them such an important producer for us. The 2017 collection is incredibly strong. They are beautifully composed and possess a dazzling clarity.

In the right vintage, Simon Bize really checks all the boxes for what we want in red Burgundies. They are not blockbusters; they do not rely on power. Instead, the wines are mineral and honest, possessing a luscious rusticity and quiet sophistication.

The 2017 1er Cru Les Marconnets has a stony core and gentle sauvage quality that is cloaked in a suave layer of dark fruits. It has an earthy minerality that is complemented by an opulent, palate-staining quality that is simply thrilling. There’s no doubt that this wine is a lot of fun to drink. There's a rugged honesty to the wine but also plenty of finesse.

These are some of the most authentic, thoughtful, and often overlooked wines we know. Bize’s wines are such soulful and long-aging expressions of Burgundy that they are “must-buys.”

Title

Burghound: "Soft wood frames the exceptionally spicy and fresh liqueur-like aromas of violet, cassis, plum and earth wisps. The lush, round and seductive medium-bodied flavors exude a subtle minerality on the sappy, solidly complex and balanced finale that is youthfully austere and quite firm. Patience advised."
