“I like the balance and transparency”
2016 Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge

Posted by Ian McFadden

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been blown away by a bottle of Drouhin’s Clos des Mouches.

It's a confounding wine. It's a 1er Cru from Beaune, an area known for a certain rusticity. Yet Mouches dazzles with its elegance and overall breeding.

Many times, I've witnessed Mouches go toe-to-toe with Grand Crus.

It probably doesn't come as a surprise that Mouches is a wine that I have a profound affection for.

I'm very happy to have another opportunity to offer Drouhin's 2016 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge at very sharp pricing - as low as $109.95 in 3-packs.

The 2016 Mouches dramatically highlights how the wine takes the force and heft of Beaune and adds an incredibly finessed mineral tension.

The 2016 Mouches possesses a lovely cool profile and concentrated, soil-inflected boldness. In this vintage, which doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to gripping palate presence, the wine manages to be lifted and explosively clear and bright. It’s really hard not to be impressed by the 2016’s sappy and transparent drive.

Clos des Mouches was one of the first sites that Joseph Drouhin bought in the 1920s and remains one of the gems of the domaine’s heavy-hitting stable. For Burgundy lovers, it’s one of the great bastions of value.

The wine has a reputation for making serious old bones.  We recently drank a glorious 1980. Even from a vintage that's nothing to write home about, it was stunning at 40 years of age. The combination of tension and sheer concentration gives me confidence that the 2016 will age beautifully.

Burghound: "In contrast to the nose of the Grèves the reduction is not subtle and I would strongly recommend decanting this if you're tempted to crack a bottle young. Otherwise there is gorgeous detail to the finer tension-filled and ultra-pure flavors that finish with a touch of austerity. I like the balance and transparency and while this is not quite as concentrated, it's more elegant. Note that my rating offers the benefit of the doubt that the firm reduction exhibited by the nose is not permanent."
