IDTT Podcast #352: Jean-Louis Chave
2013 Chave St. Joseph
Jean-Louis Chave makes some of the most majestic and profound wines on earth.
In his recent I'll Drink to That! interview, Jean-Louis Chave brings you back to a time when apricots were more valuable than grapes and when the Chave family had difficulty finding workers because nobody wanted to work in Les Bessards, one of Hermitage's great sites and a key one for Chave.
There's been an enormous amount written on Chave. What's amazing about the interview is how far it delves. There's a wealth of material that's not covered any place else.
The show is full of amazing anecdotes, like Jean-Louis' father bottling Viognier or Jean-Louis planting Zinfandel in Hermitage. Beyond these tidbits, there's an incredible amount of in-depth conversation about Hermitage, the domaine's history and St. Joseph. If you want to really understand the Chave wines, this interview with Jean-Louis is a must.

Chave is a master with Syrah and Marsanne. Listening to him talk about terroir, history and wine in general is fascinating.
We decided to single out Chave's 2013 St. Joseph. Chave is famous for Hermitage. However, the family's vine growing roots, which go back to 1481, reside in St. Joseph. Today, the Chave family home is in Mauves, in the beating heart of St. Joseph. Jean-Louis has spent considerable time working to reclaim his family's history in St. Joseph.

Jean-Louis has been a major proponent of St. Joseph's potential. Since the mid-nineties, he has been painstakingly rebuilding terraced hillside vineyards. The 2013 St. Joseph is an especially impressive example. It has the firm granite backbone that Chave talks about in the interview with a really impressive amount of depth, detail and sophistication.
Chave has long been one of our favorite producers anywhere. We're always happy to find an opportunity to celebrate his workand this episode is a welcome new resource for one of the world's great domaines. We strongly encourage you to listen to the interview.
