The 2002 Ducs is a legend.
For the past couple of weeks, I've been working through a recent purchase of back-vintage d'Angerville. I saved the best for last.
D'Angerville's 2002 Ducs is an epic wine displaying an explosive complexity, breeding, and extraordinary completeness. To echo the Burghound tasting note below, this is one of the great Ducs of the past few decades.
D'Angerville's 2.4-hectare monopole Clos des Ducs is one of Volnay's best sites. This steep, chalky site produces wines of singular intensity and breeding. It has no trouble competing with Grand Crus.
The 2002 is one vintage where you get a rare soaring complexity, seamless harmony, and an exactingly precise architecture. For all of its intensity and power, the wine really blows you away with its weightlessness and nuanced aromatics.
I've tasted the 2002 at least a dozen times since it was released and it has amazed each time. The way that Ducs ages is no joke. Last year, I drank a glorious 1920. I have no doubt that the 2002 is one for the ages.
