Angerville’s monopole Clos des Ducs is the crown jewel of Volnay.

Clos des Ducs produces some of the most intense, mineral-driven, and deeply complex examples of red Burgundy. It's a wine that ages so beautifully that it almost demands to be bottled in magnum.

Today, we’re excited to offer D’Angerville’s 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs for $529.95 per magnum.

Clos des Ducs is special. The 2.4-hectare monopole can trace its roots back at least 500 years. It has the highest elevation in Volnay at 324 meters, the steepest slope, ideal chalky soils, and with the benefit of a south-east facing aspect, it enjoys both morning and afternoon sun.

This is a vintage that captures the grandeur of Ducs with stunning precision. In 2017, a vintage that winemaker Guillaume d'Angerville called “tranquil,” Clos des Ducs stands out for its impeccable balance, beautifully delineated flavors, and a structure that all but ensures graceful aging.

The 2017 Clos des Ducs, with all its class, refinement, and impeccable breeding, is a staggering success. Very few producers managed to capture the vintage's purity and harmony and endow it with such a rigorous structure. This is certainly a vintage of Ducs that you'll be happy to have in magnums for decades to come.

Burghound: "There is an overt spiciness to the even more restrained nose that blends notes of red cherry, plum, violet, lavender and a whiff of warm earth. The sleek, intense and chiseled middle weight flavors flash ample minerality before terminating in a youthfully austere and wonderfully persistent finish that, like the Caillerets, is impeccably well-balanced. This tautly muscular effort is also youthfully austere and very much built-to-age. In a word, lovely."
