"It is easily one of the very best Champagnes I have ever tasted"
Revisited - 2002 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne

Posted by Ian McFadden

When Taittinger's Comtes de Champagne is on, it can reach heights that only a select few Champagnes can achieve.

As Galloni's note above makes clear, the 2002 is a very special wine.

It seems almost certain that the 2002 Comtes de Champagne will be a legend for the ages. That helps to explain why I never hesitate to re-buy the wine when it’s priced well. We last offered this in the fall, and I'm very happy to have the opportunity to offer it again.

I've had extraordinary experiences with old Comtes de Champagne. When an aged bottle shines, it really, really shines. The way that the 2002 combines layered complex richness with impeccable precision and class makes me confident that in time, it will be included among the greats.

Along with Krug's Clos de Mesnil, Dom Ruinart, Salon and Selosse, CdC is one of the quintessential Blanc de Blancs. Comtes de Champagne is Taittinger's prestige cuvée, first released in 1952 and sourced from some of the Côte des Blancs' top Grand Crus (Avize, Le Mesnil and Oger along with a little Chouilly and Cramant).

Even in the context of top Champagnes, this is the sort of success that happens very rarely. This is a case of the stars aligning in a powerful way.
