"It’s rare to find a champagne, or indeed, a wine of any kind, as profound" - Selosse Sous le Mont NV

Posted by Ian McFadden

All summer we've been working through Selosse's lieux-dits.

Today, we turn to what is likely the most personality-filled one among a cast of utterly singular Champagnes.

Sous le Mont is a Blanc de Noir from a parcel on the same hill as Clos des Goisses, only on the other side of the slope, facing east.

This lieux-dits is defined by a saturating yet nimble palate presence. For all of its layered complexity, it shows plenty of energy and finesse along with smoky, spicy, and slightly bitter notes.

Selosse is always quick to point to the unique terroir where the soil is stained with calcium magnesium carbonate. It's hard not to imagine it contributing to what an interesting and stand alone bottle of Champagne this is.

Above all, Sous le Mont is about its aromatics. After just one smell, you know what a unique expression of Champagne it is. Notes of things like honeysuckle, yellow fruits and spice jump out of the glass. On the palate, there's an exciting raciness and firm minerality along with an earthiness, sweet herbs and just ripe yellow fruits.

Sous le Mont is certainly one of the most mysterious and mind-bending Champagnes you'll ever taste. The profundity and sheer individuality of Selosse's wines has made him one of the most important producers in Champagne and in wine in general. Sous le Mont dramatizes just how fascinating and groundbreaking Selosse's work is.
