Drouhin's Grands-Echézeaux is one of the great unsung wines of Burgundy.
For me, there are three great producers of Grands-Ech: DRC, René Engel and Drouhin. Sadly, René Engel passed away in 2005 and prices have skyrocketed. Leaving only two superlative examples of the Grand Cru.
Drouhin turned out an incredible range of 2014s. The style here is always delicate and subtle, thriving on grace and crystal clear purity. The 2014 vintage provided the perfect conditions to showcase the utter beauty of Drouhin's style.
The Grands-Ech offers up an absolutely stunning aromatic profile that's complex and amazingly detailed. For all its nuanced floral delicacy and refinement, there's a depth and sneaky power. One of the wine's hallmarks is the supple, velvety texture studded with exotic spices.
It's this textural element that allows Drouhin's Grands-Ech to drink well relatively early and then, age for decades. The 1985 is stunning today and still has plenty of years ahead of it.
This is a wine that I aggressively snap up every year. I'm always excited to sell it, but the 2014 is a bottle that I expect to develop brilliantly.
