"When Krug is firing on all cylinders, there really is no substitute." -Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media.
The most recent release of Krug Grande Cuvée half-bottles is certainly hitting on all cylinders.
The secret of this particular release is two-fold - the base wine is the great 2008 vintage with reserves dating back to the vaulted 1990 vintage. The result is pure magic.
For me, Krug halves represent the greatest value in Champagne. These 375mls are a mainstay of my fridge at home. Often, this format is exactly what I need to pair with a single course or share as an aperitif.
The 2008 vintage in Champagne is possibly the greatest in the past decade. It's defined by sleek energy and balance, being compared to 1988. While 2002 and 1996 are defined by their power and ripeness, the 2008 vintage delivers purity, balance and finesse. This is why I went particularly deep on this edition of Grande Cuvée.
We love the way the elegant, high acid "base wine" vintages dovetail with Krug's vinous style. Vintages like 2008 play beautifully off the Maison's legendary soaring power, impeccable finesse and razor-sharp precision. The result is a mesmerizing version of Grande Cuvée.
The Grande Cuvée is the ultimate expression of Krug; the wine the Maison considers their "Sun," around which all other Krug orbits. They will be the first to admit that Grande Cuvée is not only the wine they are most proud of, but it's also the most difficult and complex to produce. The Grande Cuvée is composed of a blend of approximately 120 wines with reserve wines from 7 to 10 different vintages, which fall between 6 and 20 years of age. The final result is an inconceivable tapestry of wines woven together to form, year in and year out, a seamless Champagne with a unique and captivating signature.
Considering the time, care, labor and materials that go into each and every bottle of Grande Cuvée, I believe it represents one of the greatest wine values in the world.
This is an absolute don't miss. It's the most impressive release of Grande Cuvée in quite some time.
Note: there are rumors swirling that Krug will be discontinuing all half-bottles in the future. My advice is to jump on this.
