"Mineral Lift" - Shocking Cornas Value:
2014 Vincent Paris Cornas Granit 30

Posted by Ian McFadden

It's been impossible to take notice of Vincent Paris.

He's one of the most talked about young winemakers in the Northern Rhône.

We taste his line-up every year and often one or two of his bottlings really jump out at us. Paris' 2014 Cornas Granit 30 was one of those bottles.

The timing of this offer couldn't be better. As autumn settles in and the temperature drops, this is a bottle that you'll want around in quantity for the cold months and beyond.

Vincent Paris is the nephew of Robert Michel, one of Cornas' great old time growers and the person with whom Thiérry Allemand worked as a young man. Paris also worked with his uncle before going out on his own. (When Michel retired, he gave Paris his vines in Geynale, one of Cornas' greatest sites.)

Over the years we've watched Paris' wines get more detailed and more elegant. The 2014 Granit 30 really shows how sensitive the winemaking here is. It flaunts an impressive energy and finesse with a gorgeously delineated, dark minerality, spices and herbs. It's very rare to see winemaking of this caliber at this price. The Granit 30 bottling comes from Paris' youngest vines and from lower on the slope. What results is an accessible Cornas, but also one with plenty of seriousness.

This is something that I advise you to stock up on. It's encouraging to see a young Northern Rhône winemaker not only turning out wines so sensitively rendered, but also at gentle a price point.

Josh Raynolds, Vinous Media: "Inky ruby. Deep-pitched aromas of cherry compote, cassis, licorice and smoky herbs gain vivacity from a peppery overtone. Sappy and precise, showing strong mineral lift and energy to the sappy dark berry and licorice flavors. Closes smoky and very long, with a whiplash of juicy dark berries and slow-mounting tannins."
