There are few producers in Beaujolais who turn out wines with the same level of clarity and purity as Foillard.
For many years his Côte du Py has been a standard bearer for Morgon. But it wasn't until he released the first vintage from another lieu-dit, Corcelette, that it became clear how sensitive Foillard's winemaking is.
With the release of Corcelette, it became obvious just how dialed into the terroir Foillard is. Despite handling the wines in exactly the same way, the difference between the two wines is striking.
Today, I'm excited to offer Foillard's newest wine, Eponyme, from its first two vintages, 2013 and 2014.
Eponyme is sourced from a tiny parcel in Les Charmes. Just to quickly underscore its rarity, we should mention that there is currently no other listing in the U.S.
It's early to generalize much about Eponyme, but based on tasting a couple of other producers' wines from the site and the debut vintage, we feel that we have some sense of the wine. If Côte du Py is rich and wild-cherry-accented and Corcelette has a silky delicacy, Eponyme is delicate, darker fruited and tense. All Foillards have an amazing textural intrigue, but here you get a minerality that's profoundly tactile. We love the wine's energetic mineral streak and nuanced floral notes.
The 2013 really struts all of these qualities. We love Foillard's 2013s. 2013 was a cooler vintage, allowing Foillard to produce wines of gorgeous clarity, precision and freshness. While Foillard's 2013s may not be as immediately flattering and seductive as the 2014s, we'd be willing to bet that they'll be stunning in a few years and quite possibly equal to the 2014s.
By now, it’s clear that 2014 was an exceptional vintage in Beaujolais. The wines are imbued with a radiance, depth and concentration that we haven’t seen from the region in years. There's an incredible excitement over the vintage. As you'd expect, Foillard's 2014s are home runs.
We expect this to disappear quickly. Foillard is simply one of the masters of Beaujolais, and everyone knows it. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try our best.
