New Talent in the Northern Rhône:
2017 Domaine de l'Iserand Saint-Joseph Les Sabots de Coppi

Posted by Ian McFadden

The northern Rhône has become an obsession of ours and we're constantly scouting out fresh talent.

It's very rare that we find a relative new comer that checks all the boxes when it comes to value, purity and sheer honesty.

That’s why we were particularly excited when we came across l’Iserand’s 2017 St-Joseph Sabots de Coppi. It's one of our best finds in the northern Rhône. From the moment that we tasted it, we imagined drinking l'Iserand's Saint-Joseph very often.

The 2017 is a beautiful expression of Saint-Joseph. The aromatics are intense and precise, ranging from dark fruits to violets to a savory meatiness.

Domaine de l’Iserand is a small new estate based in Sécheras. The owner, Jean-François Malsert, ran a popular wine bar in Tournon before selling it to pursue winemaking full-time. In 2011 he founded the domaine, starting with his grandfather’s abandoned plot in Saint-Joseph, which never received chemical treatments. Currently, the domaine is 4ha with vines on granite and mica schist soils in Ozon, Arras and Sécheras that are farmed organically.

The 2017 Saint-Joseph Sabots de Coppi really shows the exacting care that Malsert takes in his farming and winemaking. The wine has a staggering clarity of fruit, transparency and precision.

Whenever we taste l'Iserand's 2017 Saint-Joseph, we're taken by its purity. It's the sort of wine that you'll want to return to again and again. Northern Rhône this painstakingly executed at this price rarely surfaces and definitely doesn't remain so well-priced for very long.
